Togo

Situated between Ghana and Benin, Togo is a small African country with around four and a half million inhabitants. There are around 78 different ethnic groups in the nation, and more than 40 different tribal languages are spoken, in addition to French.

After gaining independence from France in 1960, the political system has been very unstable. An attempt to introduce multi-party democracy resulted in anarchy and virtual civil war. Corruption and violence has been a big problem, along with widespread poverty in the nation.

The 1970s was a period of intense persecution of Christians, which caused a general stagnation in the church. In 1990, a greater freedom of religious practise was again granted. Today there are around 45% Christians (30% Catholic, 15% Evangelical), 20% Muslims and 35% practising some form of traditional religion. (OR: Today there are around 30% Catholic believers, 20% Muslims, 15% Evangelicals, and 35% practising some form of traditional religion.)

Gioventù in Missione supports some of the missionary workers and ministries in the nation.

Prayerpoints:

  • for peace and a government that promotes common good
  • for the unreached people-groups of Togo
